Poetry

Did you know that poetry is actually an older form of expression than prose? In ancient times, before the invention of writing, people used poetry to help them remember history and stories. People told stories - often about their history - in the form of long, spoken poems that they memorized and passed on from generation to generation. A poem of this type usually had a rhythmic sound pattern and rhyming words, making it much easier to memorize than prose. After people invented writing, they began to use poetry more as an artistic form. For thousands of years, poetry was the only accepted way to write drama, novels, and prayers.
